Owasso’s Horacio Bencomo - Oklahoma Army National Guard Spotlight
Owasso High School’s Horacio Bencomo is the first in his family to serve in the military and he is excited to blaze that trail. The Owasso Ram chose the Oklahoma Army National Guard after a smooth recruiting process.
“The recruiting process was very smooth and it was easy for me to understand what was going on,” said Bencomo. “I wanted to join the National Guard because I’ve had many good friends and teammates who joined a branch of the military and they’ve gotten more mature and have really gotten far in life because of their experiences.”
Bencomo worked with the Owasso Rams TV production crew and he’s looking forward to doing something in the military that will help others.
“I would like to have a job that involves working and helping other people,” Bencomo said. “I do plan on going to college when I come back from basic and AIT.”
The Owasso Rams TV media group recorded a large number of big events that were school related.
For Bencomo, the National Guard just made more sense after looking into other branches of service.
“There was always either a U.S. Navy or Marine Corps recruiter who would visit and talk to the students, but the reason I went with National Guard was because I wanted to stay close to home,” said Bencomo.
The future soldier plans to attend college and use that degree in his military career. Bencomo offers this advice for other students considering the National Guard.
“I’d say it’s an amazing opportunity. Especially if they are wanting to change their life and become a more responsible and well-rounded person.”
